It’s a good question, because these are indeed tough, frightening times. The overall economy is unpredictable, seemingly unstable, and mostly unfriendly when it comes to owning and operating a small or medium-sized business. Though Honestly, I’m utterly shocked at only how unpredictable, seemingly unstable, and mostly unfriendly MANY business owners are with their customers, clients, and patients. It’s one of the few things nowadays that leaves me completely speechless.
During days gone by 12 months, I’ve powered over 15,000 miles on various cross-country road trips over the United States. I’ve spent weeks in Seattle, Washington, D.C., Vermont, Philadelphia, New York City, and in between everywhere. All along the way I’ve stopped at a bazillion different businesses. To my amazement, finished. 80% of these businesses had in common was that they proved if you ask me precisely how little they cared about me as a customer.
As significantly as they understood, I was an area resident who was a potential, life-long customer of theirs. It didn’t matter. They just didn’t value me. The more the business seemed to trust location and feet traffic, the greater they appeared to treat their customers with disdain and contempt. Sadly, those kinds of businesses are the norm these days.
I’d eliminated with the objective (and money!) to buy. As a business development strategist who has dedicated myself to assisting to develop businesses, certainly I’m more hyper-vigilant and delicate as a person. Start viewing more closely when you’re visiting another business as a person. You will see what I’m discussing. But, if you are really fearless, you’ll look in the same way closely at your own business.

Watch your personnel as they interact with your customers (and each other). Notice any refined “attitude” or general unhelpfulness. Notice any laziness in their lack of lack and resourcefulness of productivity. Count just how many times they state “no” or “sorry, we can’t/don’t do this” throughout a day and a week. Try to witness everything as your visitors would. Amusingly, these businesses all distributed one other thing in common.
I guess they also blame the economy for his or her hostility, rudeness, and stinginess towards their customers. They can’t expect to grow their business when their attitude towards their customers drives those customers away. So, how can a business grow in the current economy? Make it super easy to do business with you. Don’t skip the power and simplicity of the step. I’ve got several encounters with business owners (as a customer) where I left determined never to return.
